Once there was a boy living in a town with his mother. He was struggling very hard to earn money and taking care of his mother.
He was looking for a job but couldn’t get it.
One day he heard that there is a post of advisor vacant in the royal court. So he went to the court and showed his interest in the post.
The king proposed his requirements for the post of the advisor.
The King said “There is a sea in the south of our town a few miles away. If you will bring me a bottle of water from that sea I will not only make you my chief advisor but I will also give my only daughter to you in the marriage.”
“I am ready” said the boy.
“But if you will fail or not come back in a month I will burn down your house” said the king.
The boy went to his mother and told her everything. He took her blessings and started his journey.
He kept on going for almost entire day then he reached into a village. Just after this village there was a large desert and on the other side of the desert was the great sea.
The boy was tired so he decided to rest in the village that night and to continue his journey on next morning.
He talked to some villagers for a while and then he asked “I have to cross this desert. But I have heard about someone. Is he real?”
There was an awkward silence. People left the place with a strange glimpse of terror on their faces.
But there was a man still sitting there. He offered the boy his hospitality which he accepted.
The boy again asked him the same question. The man replied “Yes he is real. In last two hundred years no one has ever crossed this desert because he meets them and preys on them. The desert is his kingdom and he does not like anyone in his land. No one has ever come back to the village from his territory. The messenger buries them in his 1000 miles wide and large territory.”
The next morning man gave some dates and some water to the boy and bid him goodbye.
The boy started walking in the direction which was south of his town.
After walking a few miles he noticed there was no trace human or animals. There were only some kites flying over him at very low height.
Suddenly from behind a man appeared. He approached the boy “I guess you are lost in this desert. I will help you in reaching to your destination.”
“I want to go to the great sea” said the boy.
“But you are on the wrong path you should have walking that way, to your right” pointed the man.
“Thank you. But who are you and what are you doing in this desert?”
“I am a guide. I help in crossing the desert.”
“Okay” said the boy and started walking in the direction he has taken from the beginning.
The man started walking beside the boy telling him about he should listen to him or he will be lost.
The boy did not listen. Then the man said “You are walking straight to the death. He lives just a few yards away from here, the messenger.”
“Give me the dates and some water that you have so that I will offer him and ask for forgiveness” continued the man.
The boy looked up to the sun and closed his eyes. Then he refused the proposal of the man. The man said “he will not like it.”
Suddenly a sand storm covered them. There was a high pitch roar of the sand storm. “Go back to your town or the messenger will kill you” said the man.
But the boy was not paying attention his eyes were closed and he was trying to concentrate on something else.
“This desert will eat you raw and there will be no trace of you” whispered the man.
Then the boy opened his eyes and said to the man “I knew who were you when I first saw you because no one had ever walked this desert because of your fear in last 200 years.
They have believed your lies but not me. Do you know why this desert can’t eat me?” asked the boy.
“Why?” shouted the man.
The boy whispered “Because I am the desert.”
Then suddenly the man, the messenger disappeared from there and there was no sand storm. Then the boy saw the sea water was visible from there.
The desert was merely some 20-30 Km wide but the fear of people made the myth larger and larger. Messenger was not any monster he was just a spirit manipulating people’s mind.
The boy was smiling. He had fought a good fight and he won it.
